Where to begin?

Post by eckertd »

I have an old server running Cacti 0.8.7i that I would like to migrate to a new one set up with Cacti 1.1.30.

Any hints or tips on how to go about this? Previous attempts at upgrading the current environment failed miserably. I figured it'd be easier to do it this way.

I would wait for the next release 1.1.35. This should fix a number of issues around database state after upgrading as I found some inconsistencies which lead to work being done on making the upgrade code make the database more consistent.

Database aside, you have another problem. Various templates, scripts and data sources may fail under 1.x that worked on 0.8.7. Many of these may have been updated to a 1.x version. Others may not have been or are in progress.

For example, one of the most commonly used plugins in 0.8.x was Weathermap. That is undergoing dev work pver the past two years which has had some momentum over the past few weeks and now has a working plugin that displays the maps but doesn't have full editor functionality yet.

Your best bet there is to check If you really want to be sure, I would clone the entire existing folder to a test folder. Clone the database, edit config.php to point at the cloned database, then run through the upgrade and try the system out. Don't forget that if you clone the system, you should add an extra line to the /etc/cron.d/cacti file for your new location.
