new to cacti and need some help with graphs

Hi all,

go easy on me, I'm new to cacti!

I have cacti installed and somewhat working, but for some reason, my graphs are showing up as broken images. per the FAQs posted here: http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/html/faq.html I manually ran the poller.php file from the cacti directory because it's not set up in cron yet - it outputted the following:

the problem is, the images are still broken and I do not see an /rra directory on my server in the cacti folder anywhere!!

system specs:
ubuntu 14.04
nginx
cacti 0.8.8b (I'm working to upgrade this real soon - ubuntu's repository has an incredibly old version of the software)
default ubuntu cacti location: /usr/share/cacti

any help is greatly appreciated!
