New devices show down

Post by 10LineFigure »

Hello everyone,

I am building a new Cacti server and have run into an error.

I was able to build 4 devices (Nexus 7k's and Nexus 5548's) in Cacti, create graphs and they have been working great.
The next day I started adding switches (usually 2960's and some others) but they show 'Down' under the Status section.

Heres what happens, I go to 'Devices' then click 'Add' and do the exact same thing I did for the 7k's and 5548's that are working correctly. I finish filling out the data (IP and Hostname, etc) and click 'Save' when I click 'Save' the web browser goes white and the bottom left says "Waiting for localhost..." and stays like that forever. So I refresh the page and it takes me back to the 'Devices' page, now showing the device I added, but as Down. And it stays like that. If I click on a Down device, the web page loads indefinitely.

What could be causing this? Is there any screen shots or data you could use?

Thank you

EDIT: Here is something I found that may help it was found under 'System Utilities' > View Cacti Log File

What [Downed Device Detection] are you using for these devices? After adding it, go back into the device. Top left corner should be system info and downtime detection results. what's failing?

cacti 0.8.8e was just released which fixes a number of items too.

I am using Generic SNMP-enabled Host for the 5548's. And SNMP Uptime for the 7k's. When creating new devices, I built some of them with Generic SNMP-enabled Host and some with SNMP Uptime, in an attempt to find which one would work. When I click on a device that is Down, it will not load in the web browser, it will just say 'Connecting' on the top left and 'Waiting for localhost...' on the bottom left of the web page.

I used your Windows installer : http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?t=14946 for this install. Do you have another for the 0.8.8e?

Thank you for responding.

Are you able to snmpwalk the devices in question from the cacti server? if not, sounds like snmp traffic blocked or not set up correctly. Eventually after ~30 sec or so the query should time out and the device's page should load. This is not occurring? How about changing the downtime detection method to ping?

No, I haven't build an updated installer yet. Always quite an ordeal re-testing all of the dependencies with their latest versions. For upgrading to 0.8.8e, do it manually: http://docs.cacti.net/manual:088:1_inst ... _upgrading
