mysql error while setting up cacti

I got the following error(s) while trying to set up cacti for the first time. I don't know how to resolve this.

[root@Thin-TS18 ~]# mysqladmin --user=root password myPassWord
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

Looks like the wrong format for entering your password
try
mysqladmin -u root -p
and then enter your password when prompted
