CactiEZ - Can I install GNOME?

Post by mcamcintyrem »

I recently downloaded the .iso for CactiEZ (from http://cactiez.cactiusers.org/) and installed it on a virtual machine. I got it all setup and running in no time. It works great!

Now, since this is running on CentOS Linux, I'm running if I can install Gnome desktop environment on it. I want to be able to install additional plugins and and templates. I also want to setup a SNMP Trap. Does anyone know if this is possible and how to do it? I tried running the command, which I found in a Google search,...

yum groupinstall "X Windows System" "GNOME Desktop Environment" -y

...but it didn't work as an error appeared that said that no packages were available. I'm used to Debian Linux and don't know how to add respositories or sources to an RPM-based system. Thanks.

Its meant to be a server, so the real question is why would you install Gnome on it? The 2 items you said you wanted to do (template and plugins, SNMP Trap) don't require Gnome at all to accomplish.

If you feel the need to continue though, this should work.

I understand it's a server, but I am unfamiliar with CentOS and seeing that CactiEZ is a minimal install of CentOS, I am even less knowledgeable as to how to install additional plugins. Templates are easy, because I can use the web-interface of Cacti, but plugins can't be installed that way. Also, the Nagios part of this server is not working. When I click on a menu item, all I get is:
Error: Could not read object configuration data!

Here are some things you should check in order to resolve this error:

Verify configuration options using the -v command-line option to check for errors.
Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data errors.
Make sure you read the documentation on installing, configuring and running Nagios thoroughly before continuing. If all else fails, try sending a message to one of the mailing lists. More information can be found at http://www.nagios.org.
Also, and more important, I want to install a SNMP Trap. I don't know how to do that either. As easy as CactiEZ was to get running, the other items are quite the opposite.

Installing plugins on Centos is the same as any other linux distribution. You just have to know where cacti's plugin directory is. So just download plugins, extract them, and place their folders in this folder on CactiEZ
/var/www/html/plugins/

As for SNMP Traps, I assume you want to receive SNMP Traps? If so you will need to installl SNMPTT. There are tons of guides out there, here is one from google, skip down to the part labeled "Download SNMPTT". Its from 2010, so you may have to download a newer version.
