Strange failure, no rrd's updating, no output from poller(s)

Post by jgefaell »

I find that on Sunday morning @ 0740 my graphs stopped updating. There were no corrolary events which can be related to this outage.

Right now when I run "php poller.php" from the cacti root directory there is NO OUPUT at all. You can see in the process table various php's running and after a couple minutes they stop. This seems as usual.

But no output and no updates make this a hard one to figure out.

Any insights appreciated. I hate to just ball it all up and start from scratch. This installation has been running about a month.

What version of Cacti are you running?

I was running cacti-0.8.6a.rh9.i386.rpm when this happened. Since then I upgraded to cacti-0.8.6b-pre20041012.tar.gz because you recommended it in another thread I posted about gaps in the graphs. (I found your reply when I logged in today)

So, I gave this about 8 hours of puzzling and blindly trying changes and empirically figuring things out (I now understand how the poller works much better)

Then I just nuked the whole ball of wax (I do have a mysql backup and the old rrd's, I have it all in a tarball) and started over. I can't do this again of course but this gave me an opportunity to 'do it right' or at least better the second time around.

There don't appear to be any gaps now with the new system.

Thank you for your help. I know you've heard it many times, but cacti is just swell! Thanks for your efforts.
