cacti 0.8.6a doesnt work at all.
i am sorry to say that cacti 0.8.5 to 0.8.6 are very buggy and wont work..
last version i had that worked well was 0.8.3.
my specs:
gentoo linux
php 4.3.9
mysql 4.0.20
rrdtool 1.4.49
i spent the whole day trying to figure out why this wont work.it seems like it doesnt create rrds at all.
here is my setup:
- i downloaded the source code (0.8.6.a) ,i untarred it in a directory, made it available for a vhost, set rights to apache to the cacti directories.
- configured database, set rights to a user to the cacti database
- tried to set up some ping scripts and the built one but nothing is created in the rra directory.
here is the log:

Aind,
Sorry to hear you had so many problems. We corrected an RRD bug last night and released 0.8.6a to production today. You should give it another try. Please post your results.
Don't spend an entire day before you post your questions to the board. Post and then just be patient. There are quite a few users who post fixes quite regularily. Sorry for the bad release by the way. It will get much better moving forward.

I'm having a similar problem as well. It was discussed in the thread "intermittent create/update rrd issues since 0.8.6 upgrade", but this now seems like the best thread for it.
I have installed cacti 0.8.6a and cactid 0.8.6a
php 4.3.9
rrdtool 1.0.49
mysql 4.0.20
When configured to use cactid with debug:
running poller.php results in one line:
10/05/2004 12:27:06 PM - POLLER: Poller[0] DEBUG: About to Spawn a Remote Process [CMD: /usr/local/cactid/bin/cactid, ARGS: 0 274]
Waiting on 1/1 pollers.
This the only line in the log as well. It take about 10 seconds.
When configured to use cmd.php I recieve output for all of the checks, but there is no output regarding the rrdtool.
Please let me know what additional information I can provide. I currently run .0.8.4 on my production box, but I really like the new ui features 0.8.6.

it works now.
i hacked the lib/ping.php to show UP instead of DOWN no matter what and it works.

Cacti 0.8.6b will be released tonight. Make sure that your CACTID path is accurate and that CACTID runs properly from the command line.
