Interface traffic graphs dont show the correct values

Post by dlockwood1981 »

Hello all. I've trolled through the forums looking for an answer to this question and haven't found anything. Perhaps i'm not asking the right question so my apologies if this has been asked and answered. I imported some templates from this forum which overwrote my interface.xml file and some other settings related to the traffic graphs. I copied the interface.xml file from the install package to restore that file but my settings appear to still be wrong somewhere. All of my interface traffic graphs appear to be off by a factor of 10x; e.g. i'm expecting 10Mbps of traffic on a given interface and Cacti is showing 1Mbps. I'm thinking that this would be a problem with the graph template somewhere but i've been testing different settings with no success so far. Has anyone seen this type of behavior before? Thanks!

Are you confused about megaBYTES and megaBITS? How do you know it should be 10Mbps traffic?

Thanks for the reply. The interface that I listed in the original post is connected to a 10Mbps WAN circuit; it can't go any faster. I've verified the 10Mbps of throughput using the command line during the same period that cacti was collecting data. Command line says 10Mbps, Cacti says 1Mbps so that's where I figure the graphing is off by an order of 10x.

What is the best way to continue to troubleshoot this? Should I be looking at RRDtool to see if its collecting the "right" values or do you think this has to do with the graph template?

Is it possible to just get an export from someone's interface template and restore to my system?

Thanks for your assistance.

I was able to solve this and wanted to post the solution for people searching in the future. I installed a new version of cacti using the windows installer on a separate VM. I setup a few hosts, graphing the traffic, to make sure that the problem was in fact a problem with my original installation. The traffic values were being graphed correctly on the new install. I exported the Graph Template, Data Template and Data Query from the new installation and imported them into the original cacti install where i was having problems. I then deleted the graphs and data sources that I was having problems with and re-added them.

That fixed the problem and the values are graphing correctly now.
