Tools similar to Cacti ?

Post by hajdha »

I have to measure the download speed of some interfaces of many routers, the routers are in different cities in the country,

So, I have chosen Cacti for my final project.

My question:

Is there any other applications that can do this job? because I have to compare to existent tools, and justify my choice.

Thank you

Hi
Thank you for the tools, I looked for every single tool, but I didn't see the difference between them, because I have to compare these tools, and then to justify the choice of Cacti,
So anyone can help me compare these tools, any documents, anything that can help.

Thank you so much.

The second link was really helpful.

The problem is I don't see the difference between the tools posted by EBrander.

For example if we want to compare Cacti AND zenoss according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... ng_systems

Do you see what I mean phalek.

Thank you.

I looked everywhere for an official survey, to find the difference between Cacti & (ex:ZenOSS & OpenNMS);
For example according to this comparaison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_mo ... g_software , we can't say which one is the best, they all work properly.

But can we say that Cacti is the most popular, in monitoring the traffic ??

Because I have to say why I have chosen Cacti and not the other tools

Can anyone help, any suggestions?

We can't say that it is most popular.
Which would be the metric to decide, which one is most popular? # of downloads? # of installations? # of users? # of devices monitored? ...

Thank you gandalf, for your answer.
I want your suggestion:
I have chosen Cacti in my project(monitoring the traffic).
If you were me, what would you answer to the question: why did you choose Cacti AND NOT (ex: Zenoss OR OpenNMS)?

Waiting...

hajdha,

that is a question you will need to answer. It's your project, it's your decision. Take on the responsibility.

Well, those systems partly differ in
- the architectural approach
- prereq's (some people favor Java ... or don't like databases ...)
- sheer performance
- community base
- available add-ons, plugins, templates (generalized: resources provided by maintainer and community)
- coverage (e.g. when laying stress on availability checks you will have a different result then preferring e.g. support for accounting ...)
- automation (being able to e.g. run command line scripts or using plugins like AUTOM8)
I'm sure to have missed more features that are of importance for a significant audience, so that's my personal point of view

You're right, and I am taking on the responsibility by asking the right people, I am asking about Cacti in the Cacti's forum
