Hi:
I am new to cacti and currently running 0.8.8 on my win 7.
I'd like to understand based on what criteria Cacti will select the field defined in XML for index type?
I have attached a screenshot if anyone could understand what I mean. Currently it's set to "ifDesc" by system default. It's working on the ethernet ports of my device but I must manually set it to ifIndex and fill in the index manually to allow other parts of the polling to work.
Thanks.

Re: default "index type" selection in data source
You are creating graphs the wrong way for the template used.
Devices -> select a device -> click on 'create graphs for host' in the top right corner -> select the items to be graphed and then click Create at the bottom.

Thanks for your reply. I created the graph just the way you corrected me in the first place, it then turned out the problem I faced. The graph would always use "ifDesc" as the default index, is there a way to change it (or prioritize them ?)
Thanks.
Re: default "index type" selection in data source
I'm not following you on why you must manually correct the index number as Cacti should automatically be doing that for you.
\cacti\resource\snmp_queries\interface.xml has the index order.

I checked eariler today It's now using ifIndex, so it's solved.BSOD2600 wrote:I'm not following you on why you must manually correct the index number as Cacti should automatically be doing that for you.

anyway thanks for your help, I remember I modified the xml the way you instructed under the <index_order> field:
<index_order>ifIndex:ifDescr:ifName:ifHwAddr</index_order>
I didn't work last time but now it's working ....
