After Merging rrd - cacti no longer updates..

We were attempting to merge historical data onto a currently used rrd. The merge was successful however cacti now refuses to update that rrd file, the only way to get cacti updating is if one removes the rrd and allow cacti to recreate a fresh one. Any thoughts on how to get cacti to update an rrd file that one has manually updated? (the non update problem occurs on a file that I have not updated as well but simple backed up)

Any suggestions? In a bit of a bind here. the same thing occurs with known good rrd's that had been updating previously moved from a different cacti. The datasource is using a simple snmp_oid template, nothing complicated. Any Ideas/suggestions are appreciated.

There are several possible issues.
2nd link of my sig describes a debugging process. Find the step that handles rrdtool update. Run that rrdtool update manually against the merged file and tell us the outcome
