Some graphs not updating after router power cycle

Post by MikeSullivan »

I have a Cisco 2621 router with one active ethernet port (Fa0/0) and 4 frame-relay sub-interfaces on Se0/0 (Se0/0.101 thru Se0/0.104). I have been successfully graphing all five interfaces since January. Yesterday, I powered off the router to add a second WIC card. Since powering it back on, only3 of the 5 graphs (Se0/0.102, Se0/0.103, & Se0/0.104) have been showing traffic. All 5 graphs appear to be updating, as the timeline continues, but only 3 show any traffic. I know that traffic is indeed passing on all 5 interfaces. I am not sure where to start troubleshooting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should start with checking SNMP interfaces index numbers which probably have neen changed after you added WIC. Cacti keeps your old interface index numbers and therefore polls not correct interfaces. To avoid this in the future use "snmp-server ifindex persist" in your IOS config.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, my router doesn't support that particular snmp-server command. I will have to keep that in mind next time I add any interfaces.

I was able to manually change the index numbers in Cacti so that my graphs are again working.

Many thanks!

Mike,

There will be a new feature in Cacti 0.8.6 that will allow for the detection of a host reboot/index change and will reindex accordingly. Cacti 0.8.6 is currently in Beta and will be released shortly.

In the new product there are three methods you can use to detect host SNMP Mib changes. You can read the documentation once the final product is released.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will be looking forward to its final release.
