Manual polling data from script

Post by erictioh »

Hi i'm new to cacti, just got it installed and but still questioning how can it work with my system.

Well my system is generating a log file is following form:

2011-10-11 19:30 4
2011-10-11 19:32 6
2011-10-11 19:36 1
2011-10-11 19:38 9
2011-10-11 19:39 10
2011-10-11 19:39 20

As you can see there is a time column where i want this to be X-axis and the value to be Y-axis. However it seems like cacti uses cron to keep executing a script to get data from, but what i want is i'll call rrdtool or cacti to insert the data whenever it comes available (Meaning that not fixed time period but if it available i'll push to cacti)

Possible to do ? And how ?

It's possible. The how is by writing a small script to tail the log file during polling and insert as required. The details, I leave to you.
