Bug in grapging traffic -> confused DataSources

Post by Mika »

Hi,

I've met some really strange situation, when traffic graphs selects same DataSources for income traffic and outcome traffic (as shown in attached example for both income and outcome is selected traffic_out DS). I do many measurements without traffic where several data sources are used for graphing but this happens only with traffic graphs.
As I tried to check, there is no logical sequence (at least I didn't notice) between which graphs are confused.
Temporary solution is to change DataSources manualy, but it's really temporary, having in mind that I have hundreds of traffic graphs and after correction this happens again (after few days, sometimes few weeks).
I don't have any suspections but about the names. Can it be that data source is confused because my host names have some specific symbols like "_", ".", "-", " " ?
For example InterfaceDescription by default, if there is an "=" sign in description, cacti shows only text up to "=" sign.
Anyone had anything similar to this? Any suggestions where else should I search for that bug corners?
I use cacti 0.8.5a, DebianLinux, mySQL 3.23, php4.

Thanks in advance for any information regarding this problem.

I've expierenced the same thing. Near as I can figure, it's a bug in Cacti. There are some weird problems related to Graph Templates and specific graphs. It seems when you edit a specific graph, it has a tendancy to mess up the the templated settings, so you have to go in to the template, and just click "save" cause that apparently forces cacti to re-apply the template.

Anyone can explain that, why this happens?

I have fixed several bugs in the last few versions that lead to behavior similar to what you are seeing here. All of those bugs had to do with editing a graph template causing some or all associated graphs to do this.

One thing I do know is this happening as a result of some sort of user interaction causing the bug to manifest itself. I am positive that the automated stuff in Cacti does not get anywhere near graphs or graph templates.

Do you or anyone else edit the traffic graph template at all? If so, does there appear to be any correlation between editing graph templates and certain traffic graphs exibiting this behavior?

Currently the only thing I can do to make this happen is to change the graph template of one or more graphs. I sort of doubt you are doing this however since you would more or less expect that to happen if you changed the graph template of one or more graphs.

Let me know if you run into any more clues, I'd like to narrow this down.

raX,
Thank you for interesting in this bug.
I've tried to figure out what exactly causes those DataSource confusions but now I'm confused myself :)
No one traffic graph is graphed. Tried to figure out what could be root cause, so I don't see those measurements in poller cache at all. Tried to clear poller cache - nothing changed. Also droped cacti database and re-created new one and backed-up cacti databaase backup file from working version - nothing changed (restarted server as well).
I have another working server which makes same measurements on same devices (one testing, other production server), that one works fine.
Do you raX or anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any helpfull information

Seems all cacti crashed. None of traffic graphs are displayed.
Reinstalled cacti from scratch and loaded mysql-backup file.
Now situation is like some of graphs are not shown in preview mode, but if I click on that broken image, I see all graphs, data is collecting and updating correctly.
Some broken images are already sized same size as graph picture should be, some of them not (small broken image "x" and name of it). But all of them has links where I can click and see correct Daily, weekly and yearly graphs.

Any ideas are more than welcomed.
Thanks in advance

Actually I noticed these broken preview images are for some specific traffic graphs which are done with templates which I've made for traffic graphing with HRULE of configured speed.

The HRULE/preview mode problem that you speak of can be fixed by applying the patch described in the following post:

Thank you raX. My problem was exactly like you described. I'll install patch bu tunfortunately won't see effect, since I already deleted those bad preview measurements :)
