FC switch mesurement (bits, Bytes or words)

Post by programmeheure »

Dear all,

i'm new under cacti, and snmp in general, and i have some troubles with my reports, i'm not sure of the unit of the mesurment. :-?

the cacti server is under linux, the cacti version is the 0.8.7b.

I would want to monitor an FC switch port.
to do that i first add my device: i've made:
- console--> Device --> add
here i fill the name(FC_super_switch), th IP adress, and i fill in Host Template: "brocade FC switch", i don't know what means exactly "brocade", but it was the only FC switch proposed.
- Downed Device Detection > Ping (UDP ping)
- Snmp version 2

when i creat it i've automaticly in the "associated data queries" part (at the end of the page) two kind of "data queries":
1) Brocade FC Switch (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [160 Items, 32 Rows]
2) SNMP - Interface Statistics (Verbose Query) Uptime Goes Backwards Success [254 Items, 38 Rows]

when my device is created, i make "Creat Graph for this Host", then i tick the port i want monitor, in the field "Select a graph type:" i choose "In/Out Bits" and i click "create"

It's automaticly create the data source in the "Data sources field:
*FC_super_switch Traffic - 0/1
when i click on this i see in "Supplemental Data Template Data","Custom Data","Output Type ID": In/Out Bits
"Index Value": FC port 0/1
"Index Type": ifDescr

Then i just create a new "graph tree" i call B_tree --> i make "add"
- in "Tree Item Type" i choose :" Graph"
- in Tree Item Value in "Graph", i choose "FC_Super_Switch - Traffic - 0/1" (the port number) and i finally click "creat"

Don't panic, the end comes soon. I make a lot of description to better know of my issue.

so in my graph the y-axis is graduated in "bits per seconde".
But my counter seems to be under of the real value.
I want to be sure that my counter are in bits! (and not in Bytes or words).

So i want to be sure haven't make any mistake in the procedure.
And i want to know how to check if i'm really in bits per seconde
.
:P

if anybody could ensure me theire is no mistake in my procedure, it's could help me a lot. :D

thanks a lot, sorry for my english

Sounds like you got it all figured out.

Look in the poller cache and narrow down to the FC_super_switch. Look at the OID that is queried for the interface in question. Validate that against a manual snmpwalk or MIB file definition.
