dsstats / poller interval external?

I have a couple of questions that I think are related. In looking at the config for one of my devices under the data source list I see poller interval is set to external. No idea why that would be. ?

Would the above (assuming its a problem) cause the data that's polled to show a negative value? I run: select value from data_source_stats_hourly_cache where local_data_id='46' limit 0,1; and get:
