64bit counters on server 2008? (net-snmp not working?)

Hi all,

So this is the age old question of why don't my 64 bit counters work. Sorry for bringing it up but I am completely stuck on this one.

I am building a Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtualisation Cluster and desperately need to get 64 bit counters working. I could monitor at switch level but I really need to break down the traffic going through each adapter.

The windows SNMP service is disabled as it doesn't support 64 bit. I have installed net-snmp-5.5.0-2.x64.exe and setup the community names, but still no 64 bit. Reading the net-snmp site seems to suggest that 64 bit is not yet been ported into the windows binaries, which sucks.

So does anyone know/already has net-snmp working on windows with 64 bit counters? or does anyone have an alternative that will give me access to the 64 bit mibs?

I've never found anything/one thats gotten 64bit counters (via SNMP) to work -- most likely because windows does not support them. For the larger counters, you're going to have to use WMI.

Am I missing something here? Surely each adapter has it's own cable going to it's own port on the switch?

The development servers in question have 3 Network adapters at present (It will be 4 once we get the proper hardware) iSCSI and the clusters domain have a card each. The third is split between remote management and the virtual networks. Monitoring at the switch level will only give me the combined traffic. Despite the issue being fixed by adding a 4th network card, I would rather in the long run have a reliable server 2003/2008 64bit counter. Just saves me having to chase port numbers down every time we make a change.

Cheers for the info, I thought that might be the case. I've yet to use WMI with cacti. Am I right in saying that you use snmp to access the WMI counters? I Believe I have a similar set-up for monitoring exchange server WMI's. I assume this would be possible with net-snmp. Looks like another couple of hours of research and googleing.

Anybody know any good tutorials for WMI over SNMP? (Free methods only)

WMI via SNMP doesn't exist w/o special methods. Look into snmp-informant.

otherwise, windows to windows WMI access is easy and there are lots of scripts/templates available. just be warned that wmi is expensive time wise. linux to windows, most people use nsclient -- once again there are scripts/templates for this. there is also a wmi plugin (beta) which some use.
