OS: windows
cacti v: 0.8.7d

On Settings-->Alert/Thold page there is an option for host down messages to go syslogging. Is there a way to write these messages to EventLog?

"Syslogging
These messages will be sent to your local syslog. If you would like these sent to a remote box, you must setup your local syslog to do so, Syslogging "

Sounds like a plugin specific question ;).

I've used the General ->Log File Destination: Eventlog option before so I know cacti can support it. Just a matter of the plugin(s) to have the code for it too.

by your recommendation, I was able to log the host down messages to the event log. however, I see a problem witht the format of the error. Emailed alarm has the host description in the error text, however event log message don't have that. Since I will be forwarding this message to a central log repository, this pose a problem. Is there a way to fix it so that event log message is the same as emailed message?

Emailed alarm: "Host Error : server_name (192.168.101.811) is DOWN
Message : Invalid SNMP Session"
Event Log: "Poller[0] Host[1266] Hostname[192.168.101.811] ERROR: HOST EVENT: Host is DOWN Messag"
