Cisco 4500 problem adding and graphing this device

Post by browners »

Windows Server 2003 install.
All fully working and over 60 Cisco devices currently being graphed.

Trying to add a Cisco 4500 L3 Switch. When I try to create the device and click save, the browser hangs and times out. When refreshed , the device seems to have been added.

Exact model of switch is :
cisco WS-C4510R-E (MPC8245) processor (revision 4) with 524288K bytes of memory

my CORE (x.x.x.x)
SNMP Information
System: Cisco IOS Software, Catalyst 4500 L3 Switch Software (cat4500-IPBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(40)SG, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2) Technical Support: http://www.cisco.com/techsupport Copyright (c) 1986-2007 by Cisco Systems, Inc. Compiled Wed 07-Nov-07 18:51 by pro
Uptime: 3495955911 (404 days, 13 hours, 13 minutes)
Hostname: MY_Core
Location: xxxxxxxxx
Contact: xxxxxxx

When I check devices the 4500 is listed status unknown !
I can click on the device and the list of interfaces are displayed even with thier named alias descriptions. I select an interface to be graphed and save.

When graph debugg is turned on I get the following message (although I think this is due to the initial snmp probe failing in some way)
ERROR: opening 'C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/cacti/rra/my_core_traffic_in_62.rrd': No such file or directory

Any advice or known issues when trying to poll these devices would be great.

How many interfaces does it have? PHP could be timing out as cacti queries the device for all the info. The cacti technical support page show everything is ok?

One can also increase the memory and timeout values in php.ini to help with some of the hanging issues. Also if you enable the error logging in php.ini, you can get a better idea where the problem(s) reside.

Many tanks for your response. This and a few other sites I have with similar switches have around 180 interfaces over several modules.

I have tried setting the snmp timeout to over 2000 with no success.

I know my network stuff, but php etc I dabble enough to get by only when needed. Can you advise where I can make the timeout change to the php.ini file ?

I have located the file in the c:/php folder. I have had a brief look, but do not want to screw a perfectly good stable install !

Below is a section taken from the file I would assume is where the change needs to be made (i know, i know, never assume)..

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Resource Limits ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

max_execution_time = 30 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 60 ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
;max_input_nesting_level = 64 ; Maximum input variable nesting level
memory_limit = 128M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (128MB)

OK I have now moved to using Spine. I deleted the device and added it again. The same error happened. Page timeout. After a refresh the 4500 is now showing as Status 'UP'. Progress.

I still cannot create graphs for this host. Graph debug same as above.
I have also changed the timers in php to the following :

Poller Information
Interval 300
Type spine
Items Action[0]: 136
Total: 136
Concurrent Processes 2
Max Threads 4
PHP Servers 2
Script Timeout 50
Max OID 20
Last Run Statistics Time:4.3592 Method:spine Processes:2 Threads:4 Hosts:23 HostsPerProcess:12 DataSources:136 RRDsProcessed:68
PHP Information
PHP Version 5.2.6
PHP OS WINNT
PHP uname Windows NT CACTISERVER 5.2 build 3790
PHP SNMP Installed
max_execution_time 60
memory_limit 256M

I have also noticed sometimes the device interface alias are populated, sometimes not (when deleteing the device then adding it again)

It is so close to working ! any ideas or what information I could post for further help ?

Many thanks

PS I enabled error logging using the gui. Is there other more detailed logging I can enable from the php.ini ?

Looks like its working now !! I have noticed there is a Cisco 4500 template. I downloaded this, installed it and used the following settings when adding the device:

Same timing and memory settings as listed above.
Maximum OID's Per Get Request = 40.
SNMP timeout 1500.

I hit create and it still hangs a bit but succesfully creates the rra and populates all the interfaces with alias etc !!

As BSOD said it does indeed seem like a timing problem. No idea what exactly it was but its no working. Hopefully tomorrow the other devices showing similar behaviour will be added with no issues.

PS. May I add my apreciation to the community for a brilliant piece of software.
