Poller stating host not responding to SNMP

Post by russell.seymour »

Good morning,

I have several hosts that I have been monitoring without a problem, and they continue to do so.

However yesterday I added some more hosts and they did not generate any RRD files. This morning I have dug a bit deeper and I think there is a problem with the host down detection.
I think that because the machines are noted as down they are not getting polled and that is why the files are not being created.

When I look at mu devices list it states that the machines in question are 'Down', however when I click on the host and go into the settings I know that SNMP is working as I get the information from my /etc/snmpd.conf file on the machine that I am looking at. Additionally my TCP ping to port 22 is alive.

But when I look in the Cacti log file I see that these hosts are coming back with the error:

SNMP Result: Host did not respond to SNMP

So I am confused as one part of Cacti can see the host and another cannot. All the other machines that were working before are still working.

Poller: Spine 0.8.7e
Cacti: 0.8.7e
OS: Ubuntu 8.10

I have got the Plugin Architecture configured as well.

Any help is gratefully received.

Thanks, Russell

Does the device respond to an snmpgetnext against OID .1?
If it doesn't, please consider UDP/TCP downed host detection as a workaround

Reinhard,

Thansk for this, and sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your post.

Yes the host does responded to OID .1, but only polling the server with TCP seems to be working in that the console now states the host is up.

Seems very strange but thanks for the workaround.
