The poller is the script or program that talks to the devices to collect their information.

There are two pollers. A php script (cmd.php) and a C program (spine). The cmd.php poller comes with the default installation of Cacti, and the spine poller can be downloaded and compiled separately.

Regardless of which poller you select, it is launched and controlled by the 'poller.php' script, so 'poller.php' is the only thing that is required in your cron or event launcher.

Spine is faster than CMD.PHP, yes. I don't think it's faster in retrieving the information per se, just faster in processing it.

Both retrieve SNMP information from devices.

Spine will be faster in retrieving the information, if there is a lot of information to get.
