Is it possible to monitor specific ports on a remote host?

After a couple hours of reading various posts, I'm unable to find what I'm looking for. I'm sure I've seen this before, but I'm unable to find anything about it.

I'd like to be able to test specific ports for a response. For example, I'd like to insure ssh on a remote host is accepting connections.

Is this possible with cacti? Has anyone done this before? Any help, links, specific documentation areas would be really appreciated.

rrdtool does the storage/graphing of numerical data. Think about this when you want to collect a certain piece of data.

Sounds like you need to write a custom script which does the test. It then could return 0 for failure and 1 for success -- which then could be graphed by cacti/rrdtool.
