Problem with RRAs and Graph Trees

Post by pianoman »

I'm trying to create a graph tree with two different RRA values for the same data. The idea is to show, in a single view, data for the last 24 hours as well as the last year.

After a little research on the forums, I've come across several mentions of the "RRA ID 1 Bug", and I'm pretty sure that this is my problem. However, the conventional solution to the problem isn't as straightforward. Here's one of the responses:
Thanks for the answer, I had finally found how to solve the RRA ID 1 problem by changing the parameter in the config panel. In fact, there was a timespan by default, thus preventing the use of the RRA ID field (tricky
configuration), putting the timespan to 0 in user setting was the right solution
This solution works fine if all you want to do is change the default view into something that's not the "Day View" for all graphs. But what I want to do is have DIFFERENT views for the same data in the same graph tree. And in order for that to work, I need for the Round Robin Archive drop-down menu to actually work properly.

The last post I saw on this subject was 2006, so I'm probably looking in the wrong place for the current answer. Has this problem been solved in a different way, or is this still considered a bug?

By the way, thanks for Cacti. It's opened up a lot of possibilities for data monitoring at my current place of employment, and has given management new fresh things to argue about. :D

At some point we will redesign the concept of Tree, likely next year. Please checkout the beta of 0.8.7c when you get a chance.

Question about RRA in graph tree

Post by The Newbie »

What is the difference between selecting a certain RRA (hourly, daily, weekly, etc.) when creating a graph tree and then choosing a particular preset (Last half hour, last hour, last day, last 2 days, etc.) when viewing the graphs?

Does choosing a different preset change which rra the graph is pulling the data from?

I'm confused about this.

Thanks,
The Newb.

In general, it is possible to advise rrdtool to use a specific RRA. But we do not use this technique. We only provide the timespan that you selected to rrdtool, and it will determine the "best fitting" rra to display. So it does not depend on the way you go to define a specific timespan but on the timespan itself. RRDTool does not print out which rra was chosen, in case you want to ask ...
