Link speed add-on/plugin ?

Post by gumis »

Did anyone ever though about a plugin or addon for Cacti that would test Internet connection link speed (down/up) ? I'm not talking about network (Internet) traffic usage or router sync speed. I was thinking about something like this: http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ of course in nice Cacti graphs...

Or maybe there is one already somewhere ? (I couldn'tfind anything like that...)

So you do want to stop download/upload of your internet connection every 5 minute by filling it up with a dumb up/download? You can do so writing a custom script.
But I do recommend more intelligent methods. I remember vaguely some method based on ICMP with varying payload. Ugly as well, as many network devices will block/delay ICMP

Some speed tests will report different results. This is primarily due to latency. As the latency increases, the speed possible decreases. So, if I am in Oakland County Michigan (which I am), and I do a speed test to Chicago, the result will be much higher than if I did the same speed test to Bangalore.
