can cacti send a page or trigger another program/script?

I need to implement a system to monitor our servers and send out an email/page if something goes wrong. I have configured OpenNMS before but it is overly complex for my needs. I know that Cacti has the Thold plugin for setting thresholds and sending emails but can it or something else send out a page or trigger another program or script?
