Fatal error: session_start():

I use gentoo - I emerged cacti and created the mysql db and all the other things as described in the documentation on the raxnet website.

When I go to http://localhost/cacti/ I get this error:

Fatal error: session_start(): Failed to initialize storage module. in /home/httpd/htdocs/cacti/include/auth.php on line 40

anyone got any idea what is going wrong ?

I know enough to say that this is not a Cacti, but a PHP or Apache problem. As far as what exactly is wrong, I am not sure. Any ideas?
