Problems adding "Create Graphs + Data Sources" ent

Post by Suit »

Hiya,

Okay.. I've been playing around with Cacti for a couple of days now and as far as I can see it is exactly what I need for my current project. Love the way you can slot in scripts to retrieve your own data how you want it.

Anyway.. thats the theory, but so far I've not actualy been able to set up a single host on (any of) my installation/s of Cacti. Now, I'm not sure if this is a bug or simply that I'm not quite grasping how Cacti works.. So i thought I'd show a simple walkthrough of the steps I took from a fresh install to add a single graph to a host. If i'm going about this the wrong way, please correct me.

(From a fresh install)
- click polling hosts from left menu
- click localhost from hosts list
- select 'interface - non-unicast packets' and tick associated check box (NB: This is picked at random, the same behavour is observed regardless of what I try to add it would appear)
- click save in the bottom right corner
- leave default settings alone in the new dialog and click 'create'
- click localhost from hosts list
- note: no mention of 'interface - non-unicast packets' in the "create graphs + data sources " table. Yet a graph called "Localhost - Non-Unicast Packets" and a data source named "Localhost - Non-Unicast Packets" are created. However.. nothing is added to the polling (in line with the lack of entry to the polling hosts section) so these additions are redundant.

Now.. if I go to the relevant 'host template' and add it there... it will get added to the list. But surely, this isn't the way I'm supposed to do it? If it is, I'm going to need to create a whole bunch of host templates, one for each and every server I'm incharge of as no two are the same (in terms of monitoring requirements).

I've tried adding a entry to "Create Graphs + Data Sources" to a freshly defined host under 'polling hosts' which isn't associated with any host template, but I observe the same behavour.

So... is this me doing something wrong? Or are their any workarround to this issue?

Thanks in advance!

If this has already been covered elsewhere, could someone please point me to the relevant thread. I have been looking through the archives but so far, not spotted anything that seemed related.

Cheers!
Tim
