XML import/export has too much info?

Post by simishag »

The XML import/export functionality has some non-obvious behavior. The export includes a lot of info, IMHO too much, and the import blindly follows whatever is in the import file.

For example, I imported a couple of files today, and the new XML updated all of: CDEF, GPRINT Preset, Data Input Method, RRA. The only things I really wanted were the Data/Graph/Host Templates and the Data Query. The update to my RRA settings was really annoying; those are global settings and I don't think an XML import should be able to change those without some warning.

I initially posted about this here:

Is it possible to draw some lines as to what settings are "ok" for import/export and which should be protected?

If you "Omit dependancies" when exporting, this problem should not occur.
Version 087 has changed concerning the RRA issue, which was indeed annoying. Default is now to keep rra settings, but you are able to override
