W2k Upgrade from 6.2 problems

I am having a very tough time upgrading from 6.2, I receive:

Error

You are attempting to install cacti 0.8.2 onto a 0.6.x database. To continue, you must create a new database, import 'cacti.sql' into it, and update 'include/config.php' to point to the new database.


when I do try to create a new database and "import" the data from the old, I get errors - Is there a correct procedure for importing 6.2 data to an 8.x database??

I was able to get it to work by first upgrading to 8.2, initially I was actually trying to upgrade to 8.3a right from 6.2 which did not work.
