energy usage meter

Post by tropicalview »

Hi everyone,

Does anybody know a ampere meter that i can connect to the network to messure the current using?

i'd like to place them on the electricity input of the building (3 phases) and monitor the current flowing in.

So i need the hardware to messure and the graphs, or advice how to make the graphs.

Kind regards,

That is an awesome idea!

The closest thing I know of is a PDU with SNMP:

This has me thinking that somebody already makes this...
Thank you,

Ernie

Hi N3NCY,

The PDU is great indeed, great for a server rack.
but the thing i like to monitor is a whole building.

So what i have in mind are 3 voltage meters and 3 ampere meters (the ones you put around the cable, not between)

So if anyone know's about this. please let me know.

Contact your local Electrical Supply house, someplace like United Electric or Hagermeyer. A salesperson there can probably find something like that.

Hi streaker69,

That;s a little bit a problem here.
I'm located in Curacao,
Curacao is a small island near Venezuela.

Curacao is also a very small comunity and specialized equipment like this is not available here.

Kind regards,

Some people like Hager and Merlin Gerin make MCBs with measurement loops in them, I believe.

I'd like something like this for our datacentre too, but the only thing like this that I found would only go up to 20A or so (and not the 600A we really use).

These guys do the 20A sensors. I use their temperature sensors around my DC with Cacti and some perl script, and they work well. Maybe these would be OK for per-cabinet feeds?

I haven't found a clamp meter that has any serial/whatever output though :-(
Weathermap 0.98a is out! & QuickTree 1.0. Superlinks is over there now (and built-in to Cacti 1.x).
Some Other Cacti tweaks, including strip-graphs, icons and snmp/netflow stuff.
(Let me know if you have UK DevOps or Network Ops opportunities, too!)

Actually it looks like you might be able to get it from the generator controller/automatic mains fail panel, if the building is a datacentre

AMF controller with RS232 output

Maybe you don't want to rewire your building though ;-)

Kind regards,
FedEx and UPS doesn't deliver there at all? You guys are completely self sufficient that you don't need any supplies from outside sources, well that's just great.

Whatever device does this, you're going to have to have it spec'ed and ordered from a company that specializes in that kind of equipment. It is then going to need to be installed by a professional.

It is not something you're just going to find and be able to order from a catalog. United Electric and Hagemeyer are both International companies and could easily supply you with this equipment.

Hello,

Have a look here - this is good for data centre power billing and measures individual cables from each MCB - haven't looked at the snmp interface yet though (or if it even has one) but does the job of power monitoring:

http://www.trendpoint.com/EnerSure.html

We use APC PDU's as advised by n3ncy in the datacentres and stack them all into one graph to get power usage for rows of racks in data centres - this has the advantage that you can see which rack is using all the power rather than a total per phase,

HTH

Sure, as mentioned, if you have PDU/UPS or switchgear that is SNMP compliant...no problem.

If not, you will need at least Current Transducers (CT) to measure voltage and current (amperage). The CTs are typically connected to 4-20mA sensors which then connect to some form of protocol converter or gateway. Look into CSI (csimn.com) and Veris (veris.com).

Veris offers a set of CTs and also if you need more than voltage and current, look at their H8238 Multi-circuit monitor.

The CSI products are capable of various inputs for sensors like 4-20mA or any RS-485 ModBus/RTU device. In addition they offer products that have Ethernet/SNMP which does not require any additional drivers whatsoever (for the CTs, PDU, UPS, etc.).

Once you have SNMP...the rest is history.
