Monitoring Windows 2003 from a Linux Cacti Installation

Post by jriggin »

How do I go about monitoring disk usage, CPU utilization, etc on a Windows 2k3 Server from a Cacti Linux install?

I used the "Windows2000/XP" host-template and it all worked out of the box.

Of course first you need to make sure SNMP is installed on the server.
Server: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 (running on a VM, 4Gb RAM)
Cacti: 0.8.8a (using cmd, 270 datasources in 145s)
MySQL: 5.5.16, Apache: 2.2.21, PHP: 5.3.16

SNMP is installed...it pulls the location & contact info for SNMP on the Windows server so it must be working to some extent. I chose V2 in Cacti.

Did you click "Create Graphs for Host" and select what items you wanted it to graph?

Ok, so? Do the graphs show up with valid data?

Edit..

The CPU Usage was showing Red X's, now it's just showing 'nan' as the value for everything.

Here's an error in the log file:

07/23/2007 01:20:02 PM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] Host[2] DS[17] WARNING: Result from SNMP not valid. Partial Result: No Such Object avail

From my FAQ:

Q: Why doesn't Windows return Disk or CPU usage via SNMP?
A: Open up the SNMP Service and click on the Agent tab. Make sure all the service checkboxes are marked (they are not by default). Restart the SNMP service.

All of them are checked

Well I got it up and running by installing SNMP Informant and creating a new data source according to some how-to article I read. it seems to be running fine. One other issue is that the localhost (CentOS5) reports 2M max for the memory usage on the server. The server has 2 gigs of ram with a 2gig swap file. Why would it report it as megabytes instead of gb?
