Something I've been thinking about for a while now (perhaps it'll be a good excuse for me to edjimicate myself more on the plugin architecture) that I think would be a nice feature would be a way that in the graph trees one could specify a referral to another cacti server. For instance, supposing you've got one cacti server in Europe monitoring all sorts of gear on that continent, another cacti server in the US monitoring gear there, and perhaps one or two more in other locations. You could reduce the amount of cacti-related traffic (snmp or otherwise) going across WAN/VPN circuits, or at least centralize it somewhat. Then in the graph trees on a master cacti server (or perhaps on any of 'em?) one could create an element sort of like a "header" that instead referred to a graph tree on a different cacti server. And perhaps in addition to "host" and graph elements one could have "remote host" and "remote graph" elements referring to hosts 'n graphs on another cacti server.
The intent is that you could have one view of all of your cacti trees regardless of what server in which goegraphical location they were in. Does anything like this currently exist and I just don't know 'bout it? I'm a complete newbie to the cacti plugin architecture (just skimmed some of the docs on it) but I've done plugins for squirrelmail and done a bit of other php coding.
Or maybe it's just a dumb idea...

not a dumb idea but not new. It is already discussed in several topics here.
One of the most extensive is
http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?t ... ed&start=0
Post it there and share your ideas. There are several basic facts to consider.
And if you reside in Europe, the "distributed polling" subject will be a topic of our next CactiCommunityConference on October at the Linuxhotel.de Germany.
The final schedule will be posted in the forum (Announcements)
Best regards
