Big problem - What's going on!
I've been running the latest Cacti for a few months now on a quad-core Win2k3 host. It's been working sweet, with no problems. I use cmd.php (not cactid). Cacti is configured for 8 cmd processes.
Early this morning, at around 4:30am graphs stopped being generated. All the polling still seems to be ok (checked the logs for this), but rra's are not updating. Nothing has changed on the box for this to happen, and no, I wasn't in at 4:30 this morning
Looking more closely, the php-win process never completes, yet the end of the log file says that the process has completed in ~90s or so, but doesn't report any rra's being updated. I checked permissions, and they all look ok. I checked the database consistency, and that's fine. As I said, nothing has changed that might cause this. I can see php, cmd and perl processes still running in Task Manager, when the process should have completed ages before.

What php version? 5.2.1 has issues with isaspi, upgrade to 5.2.3 (might still need to replace libmysql.dll with the one from 5.2.1 since 5.2.2 it was buggy).
Turn the logging level to debug for a few cycles and manually run the poller (php <cactipath>\poller.php). Any errors?

Ran the poller manually, and other than a few 'ERROR: not enough arguments' and THOLD messages, everything else was OK. The poller got to 95s then just sat there, until it hit 293s when I got the 'max execution time exceeded' error. I checked the rra's after the manual run, and about half of them updated, the rest didn't.
I'm at a loss as to what could have caused this.

I had the same issue a while back as this, and it was actually a corrupt database. I dropped the existing one, and restored from the backup from the night before. After doing this, the RRA's started updating again.

I'd already checked the integrity of the database, and it seems ok. No errors reported at all.
I've been working on this all day so far, methodically stepping through the problem. I disabled every device being monitored, then gradually added them back in 5 at a time, then I re-ran the poller manually from the command line. I may have found a couple of devices that *might* have been causing polling problems, but I'm still not 100% sure. These are disabled at the moment.
Basically, if I run the poller from the command line, I see the poller process windows open, and then start to close as poller.php waits on the pollers to finish. I can now successfully see all the process windows finish, and then the rrd update cycle. Odd thing is though, that the first time I do this after enabling a bunch of hosts I see messages in the output similar to;
ERROR: illegal attempt to update using time 1181187635 when last update time is 1181231136 (minimum one second step).
When the poller finishes, I get a final message;

Notice that the host count is the same, but the RRDsProcessed value is completely different second time round. Infact, the second run output is correct, as there are 1440 RRD's updated.
Also, every time I run the poller, a window stays open on the screen for a few seconds, echoing the following a few times;

So, although things are getting back to normal (sort of!), I still don't know exactly what went wrong, or how to stop it happening again.

I know you said that you didn't make any changes, but have you by any chance updated RRDTOOL.exe recently, or has this process hung ?
Also, how many script servers are you running, and how much memory is allocated in php.ini to run scripts ? The default is 8Mb - if this has not been changed, raise it to 32Mb to see if this makes any difference.
For the device that is repeatedly being recached, see if you can walk the sysUptime OID to see if it increases or not.

I definately haven't updated rrdtool, probably not for over a year now. I'm still running the cygwin v1.2.12 from 12/05.
I've checked on the hosts triggering the re-cache event. They're devices that have been added recently (network switches). SysUptime walk shows the values are increasing as expected.
As for the script servers, if you mean cmd processes, then the server runs 8 (max). I'd already increased the mem count in php.ini to 64M. It's been like that for a long, long time.

Hmmm.....could you try lowering the amount of pollers you have for cmd.php to 2 x the number of processors. How many script servers are you running ?
Does the poller "stall", and if it does, fire up task managager, and let me know how many php.exe processes there are (I'm assuming you're running Windows).
Could you also please post a copy of your php.ini file.

As I've said, by trial and error I've now got about 70% of the devices enabled and polling again now. I'm working on the others.
The poller process stalls, but doesn't spawn more than 8 php subprocesses (with the settings configured for 8 concurrent cmd processes).

1) If you are running cmd.php and scripts, and they don't have their own timeouts, they can hose completely your polling if they don't timeout.
2) You illegal update is/was likely caused by a time change on the server, or multiple pollers. However, the timestamp that I saw would indicate that somehow the servers time changed. This can be devistating to a RRD based system. So play close attention to that.
3) I set the PHP memory higher than 32mbytes, to more like 128mbytes. Who can't afford that these days.
If case 2 sounds familiar, all graphing would be restored after you have eclipsed that time period.

I checked into your idea about a time issue, and I think there was a problem around the time everything went haywire. Another Windows machine on the network suddenly became the preferred time server, which although didn't cause the Cacti server to change time, caused it to believe it's time source wasn't trusted, and stopped syncing. If there was a small change in time during a poll (<1s), is this enough to cause problems like this?thewitness wrote:1) If you are running cmd.php and scripts, and they don't have their own timeouts, they can hose completely your polling if they don't timeout.
2) You illegal update is/was likely caused by a time change on the server, or multiple pollers. However, the timestamp that I saw would indicate that somehow the servers time changed. This can be devistating to a RRD based system. So play close attention to that.
3) I set the PHP memory higher than 32mbytes, to more like 128mbytes. Who can't afford that these days.
I've now set PHP memory to 128M. The Cacti server has 2Gb, so should be enough.

I am having a similar issue. I was out of town last week, so no one was touching the cacti server. Last Thursday morning around 5:45 am the rrd files stopped being updated. The poller is still running normally every 5 minutes but no data is being updated in the graphs. I have used Cacti for several years now at different companies. I have never run into this before and am curiuos what else I can check. I am running cacti-0.8.6j-1 on Centos 4.4., php version 5.0.4, rrdtool version 1.2.15.
It believe we may have had a DNS issue that day but it cleared up soon after. Could that have caused the database to become corrupt? Or there a way to verify if the database is clean?
I appreciate your help. I am at a loss.
