no graphs, as this is taking way too long to figure out what went wrong, and after a couple of days strugling with cacti i would be much obliged to get some help overhere...
base install is ubuntu 6.10 desktop
net-snmp
php5-mysql
snmp data and interfaces are collected
php -m: mysql is up
see att1 for more error message
see att2 for permissions on folder
Cacti install is in /var/www
rra and log has www-data permissions 777
Apache2 is running
Mysql database has been created: cacti.sql
mysql> GRANT ALL ON cacti.* TO master@babel IDENTIFIED BY
DATA yes, VISUAL no

Correct, in Settings -> Paths, the location to RRDTool. It should be the location of the binary, not the directory of which the binary resides.
