cacti OID differs from mrtg

Post by coreyeos »

I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem and hope somebody here can help.

I can't get cacti to poll 64bit counters on my dell 6248 switch, although MRTG polls them just fine.
MRTG graphs look correct above 114Mb/s
Cacti graphs are reporting much less BW.

2 hour example (All in Mb/s):
MRTG:
Max Out: 183.4
Avg Out: 96.0
Cur Out: 98.5

Cacti:
Max Out: 102.78
Avg Out: 52.4
Cur Out: 102.78

MRTG Config:
Target[192.168.0.1_1]: -1:community@192.168.0.1:::::2

TCPDUMP of mrtg poll:
15:03:01.858451 10.10.10.2.41715 > 192.168.0.1.snmp: C=community GetRequest(37) .1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.10.1 .1.3.6[|snmp] (DF)
15:03:01.875055 192.168.0.1.snmp > 10.10.10.2.41715: C=community GetResponse(37) .1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.10.1=202605615334.000000 [|snmp]

TCPDUMP of Cacti poll (Using SNMP V2, "Generic SNMP-enabled Host" Template):
15:05:06.871790 10.10.10.2.43652 > 192.168.0.1.snmp: C=community GetRequest(30) .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.1 (DF)
15:05:06.874022 192.168.0.1.snmp > 10.10.10.2.43652: C=community GetResponse(35) .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.1=3906143690
15:05:06.874484 10.10.10.2.43658 > 192.168.0.1.snmp: C=community GetRequest(30) .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16.1 (DF)
15:05:06.876801 192.168.0.1.snmp > 10.10.10.2.43658: C=community GetResponse(34) .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16.1=766529045

Notice the OID's are different. Can anybody please guide me in correcting this issue with Cacti? I've had no better results with SNMP V1.

Thank you in advance for your help.

1) You must use snmpv2 and 64bit templates in Cacti.

2) MRTG and RRDTool average data differently, so comparing bandwidth totals won't work.

3) Looks like cacti is polling the generic OIDs for interface, while MRTG is polling some Dell specific ones. Either search the script forum for others who have already made dell templates or make your own. Read through the documentation site on how-to.
