General SNMP question
alright, so I have Cacti up and running. It has been for over a year and everything is great. I know that cacti averages the values after so many "steps" in order to conserve space. That is how RRD's work. My question is on the polling side. My understanding is that when the poller connects to a snmp device, and polls a counter such as CPU, the value that SNMP returns is what that counter was reporting at that exact time. Is that correct?

That is correct, yes, but ...
There are several different CPU OIDs. One set is defined as a GAUGE. For those, the answer is correct and complete.
But there's a more interesting set of CPU OIDs defined as COUNTERS. They increase every second. In this case, you will even see spikes between to polling events.
