Monitoring the status of switchs' ports

Hi community,

I was wondering if it was possible to monitor the status of switchs' ethernet ports using cacti's plugins (for example threshold) ?

I would like to be alerted when one of my ethernet ports goes down... Does anyone have any information concerning this matter ?

EDIT: I found out that the following OID could be very useful in combination with this template:

"ifAdminStatus" "1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.7"
"ifOperStatus" "1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.8"

Templates have been posted with a title like "cisco port status monitoring" or the like. I'm quite sure, that they are not cisco specific. Please google
