Device's status

Please , help me in understanding how to cacti calculates Status of the device .

The status column in Console -> Device ?

I'm trying to find the difference between Up,Unknown and Down.

"Unknown" is set e.g. if the device was never polled yet. This is normal, when the device was just created. And it is normal, when no graph exists for that device. Set poller logging level to DEBUG for one run and see messages in the log file giving you more information about "availability tests"
