Device in DOWN State

Hello All,

I have been troubleshooting this issue for some time now. I have one device (Cisco 7200 router) that will not move from the downed state. It successfully query the SNMP Interface data and the sysContact/sysLocation information but for some reason it remains in a downed state. I can ping it from the console and perform snmp queries to the router. My "Downed host Detection" method is set to Ping and SNMP with UDP Ping. When I perform a debug of on cactus I find absolutely nothing in the logs for that particular device. Strange!!

Any thoughts?

When you view the device in the device editor, what does the SNMP Information at the top say? Error? Or does it have data?

It gives me the router information not ERROR. That is what is so confusing with this situation. It obviously can contact the router but won't put it in an UP state.

What is your host down detection method in your setting.

As I stated in my post,I am using the Ping and SNMP method. I am using UDP Ping.

That's what I get for answering questions while on a conference call at work.

Does the router respond to ping from the Cacti server.

I am able to ping the device from my server. Of note though, I am testing with ICMP ping not UDP ping. I'm not sure how to test UDP ping from a linux server.

Anyone have any further insight into this issue. I cannot seem to get it to show as UP even though I can ping and SNMP query the device.

The UDP ping uses some UDP port in the 33,000's. That may be blocked by a firewall or the target may not respond. If ICMP works well (poller must run as root or cactid must be tweaked), use this. With cacti 0.8.6i, it should be enough to have one test succeeding

... Could it be that the SNMP agent on the 7200 is secured in a way that it does let some OID reply go out but not *ALL* of them, including your if/up states for the interfaces?

I had a similar issue when trying to obtain *some* information from a specific Linux host, whose snmpd.conf file was configured with a *PARANOID* instead of *Read-Only*.

How's the snmp configured on the 7200?

Any luck with this Keene44? I'm also having this difficulty with one of my netgear devices. SNMP only works fine but as soon as I switch to ping(icmp or udp)/snmp it shows it down.

What happens if you do SNMP only for host availability? Does it show up then?
