migrated to new server platform, lost text on graphs

I've done something to my config. what would cause php to build the graphs, but not place the text at the bottom part of the graph? It was working fine til I migrated over to a new server. I've rebuilt php (gd, png, zlib, freetext) with apache.

all Appears well, but the graphs have no textual data, as below. I thought it was due to some libraries not correctly being read by PHP, and it may be. I've rebuilt all of the key modules/libs as I can tell. Just three dots...

Appreciate any pointers..
