[INFOREQ] device settings change afer polling

Post by egarnel »

Ok, this is wierd!

I set all the edge switches to hub/switch and the core L3 switches to switch/router yesterday. today, after the mactrack update has run, things are not what I set them to be (see attached).

Many of ourt edge switches have L3 capability, but we are not utlizing it on them, only on the core devices.

I'm a bit confused. Can you please provide some context.

Thanks,

Larry

Ok,

The only devices that should be listed as switch/router in the attached jpg are shownet-6506A and shownet-6506B. All other devices should be listed as hub/switch.
The two L3 switches run as an hsrp pair, all other switches are only serving in layer 2 capacity and do not provide/participate in any layer 3 operations.

I think maybe the device type associations are coming from the device types table here. It's been a while....

Ok, so if I have switches that have L3 capability, mactrack will see it as a switch/router? My understanding is that there needs to be at least 1 router for mactrack to identify the end device addresses. How does mactrack determine which is the correct router.

I recall the mrtg cammer script, you would have to indicate the router in order to get the end ip address.

Right, so you have to make sure that the sysDescr_match and sysOID_match in the Device Types table properly recognizes the device as a Switch/Router. Also, set your device in the system the same way. But I believe that I wrote it for the Device type autodetection to take precident. Like I said, it's been a while.... :(
