Bytes to Bits

I just installed cacti, and I'm liking what I see so far. But, I'm having a horrible time getting my graphs to convert from bytes to bits.
I setup cacti to pull the normal mibs from a cisco7513's DS3 card (our link to Qwest). I let everything run, and it's dandy, and it makes a purty little graph.
Now, I go in to "Console", "Graphs", "Edit Graph Items" for the appropriate graph title", and change all the items' CDEF Function to "Turn Bytes into Bits". I do all 8 items, and then when I return to my graph, it's not there; just an empty shell of where a .png file is supposed to show in a webbrower. If I go back and change all the graph item's CDEF functions to "none", the graph re-appears. What am I doing wrong?
