I am looking at a couple different solutions right now and found your post as a result of a forum search. Here is a tid bit of info I found in the install doc for smoke ping:
... It seems that older versions of fping report round trip times in 0.1 milliseconds instead of 1 milliseconds as advertised ...

I also see times/data that seems to be off by a decimal or two.

From an Ubuntu Dapper (6.06) server with fping: Version 2.4b2_to $Date: 2002/01/16 00:33:42 $

Also, the memory usage makes no sense. It says:
Free: mem: 261.3 k
Free: swap: 5.86 M

This machine has 4GB of ram and 11GB of swap.

"free" says that it using the following:
Free: mem: 3 MB
Free: swap: 11 GB

So obviously Cacti is NOT polling the data correctly. What the heck is it reading?

If you upgrade Cacti to 0.8.6i, your ping number will look much better.
