Graphs not displaying anymore

hi I have the latest version running on Suse 10. It worked like a charm for months until a colleague turned on safe mode last week. Then graphs were blank. As soon as I discovered this I turned it off again and now graphs are not being displayed anymore. I ran debug mode, looks all fine to me, the only thing I see is in apache error log:
sh: /rrdtool: No such file or directory
The paths in cacti are correct - it is /usr/bin/rrdtool.
I searched the forum but did not find anything to solve this. Anybody any idea? Polling manually shows no errors...

okay after searching for some more hours I ran the poller again manually as the cacti user. The poller finished successfully and the graphs showed up again. The poller is in the crontab of the user and runs every 5 minutes, the manual run brought the graphs back...
Anybody understanding whats happening?
