Creating data source doesn't create rrd

Post by zman818 »

Hello.

I've installed cacti 086h and everything from a stock-installation standpoint appears to be working well. However, when I attempt to create a new data source (Localhost Interface Traffic, for example) it fails to create an rrd file.

Data source debug mode shows..

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/rrdtool create \
/var/www/cacti/rra/localhost_traffic_in_23.rrd \
--step 300 \
DS:traffic_out:COUNTER:600:0:100000000 \
DS:traffic_in:COUNTER:600:0:100000000 \
RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:600 \
RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:6:700 \
RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:24:775 \
RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:288:797 \
RRA:MAX:0.5:1:600 \
RRA:MAX:0.5:6:700 \
RRA:MAX:0.5:24:775 \
RRA:MAX:0.5:288:797 \
This creates a file without issue if run from the console. Permissions are wide open for /rra (however, the graph never seems to actually populate with data).

Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Creating data source creates partial graphs

Post by harri.patteri »

I have guite a similar problem. I upgraded my Cacti sometime ago to 0.8.6h -version. Somewhere along the road I noticed some problems.

When I add more graphs (in/out bits+unicast packets) for a device that has been graphed for a year now, Cacti generates only packet-graphs. Cacti doesn't create traffic-graph files at all, I see only blank spaces in those interfaces. I can't understand what's happening. Old graphs are fine.

Why Cacti is able to create new graphs for unicast-packets but it can't create graphs for in/out bits for a same HP switch device ?

Actually, I think we have different issues... mine stems mostly from user error and failure to RTFM. If I create a ucd/net device I'm able to get traffic information without issue. I was apparently trying to elicit traffic info from the local linux device, which in their current state none of my data sources can provide.

I apparently don't quite yet fully understand the relationship between queries, input methods, sources and how they're graphed. I also apparently have a bit more reading to do before I can hope to do anything outside the box. :)

May I recommend reading some of my HowTos linked in my signature? Start with the second to last one; rest is up to your liking ...

Thanks Reinhard. I have, and things are purring along nicely. Even crafted my own templates to handle Apache mod_watch data. I feel so empowered. :)

Well, in this case I would take the opportunity to ask you about publishing your templates, perhaps along with some words and a screenshot, in the Scripts and Templates forum

Will do. I'm just letting it tick along for a few days before packaging and posting, lest I embarrass myself with some silly oversight. :)
