Help: Cacti for DUMMY

Hello,
Cacti is a great tool, but I feel like a dummy trying to make it work. Would anyone who have successfully installed and configured Cacti on Windows XP or 2003 provide a step by step guide? Your work will be deeply appreciate by all newcomers.

Thanks for the instruction. I followed it through until I entered following commad:
C:\MySQL\bin>mysqladmin --user=root password xxxxxx
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'
I search the posting and one thread is close to my case(http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?t ... g+password), but copy and paste the suggested command won't work. I got similar result:
error: 'Access denied for user 'ODBC'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

Are you using an existing mysql installation or a new one? If a previous install, it seems you've denied root access to the localhost. Use MySQL administrator to allow that.

The thread you found is 2 years old and stuff has changed some. Following the install guide in my signature closely will result in a flawless install (trust me, I've done it numerious times following it).

I followed the instruction line by line on a second virtual machine and still get the same error. Here is what I have on the vm (vm workstation 5.5.1, windows 2003 std, No SP or Patches, NO antivirus, NO firewall, MySQL server 5.0.20, PHP 5.1.2 and other apps listed on the instruction until page6 - configure MySQL)
I will install SP1 to see if that make any difference.

C:\MySQL\bin>mysqladmin -u root password 123456

I'm not sure how you could've set up mysql and it still denies you locally... that IS the default setting. When you installed mysql, did you go through the additional configuration screens which set up a root password, allowed/disallowed remote root access, etc?

Heh, without root access you won't get anywhere... I suggest you Google on how to reset the root account.

I switched to Mysql 4 and everything works! Thanks!

One thing I missed is reset permission for Cacti folder, cuz one of the installations DO screw up the permission and cause some errors when first time launch Cacti in IE.

Move on to additional features.
