I've created a bash script to display internet download/upload data
eg
%ipaccount 192.168.0.10
download:123456 upload:456
I created a data input source which accepts input of ipaddress and outputs two values as above...
Now I stuck what do I do next and have I got the above correct?
iptables data source

Please wait a little. There'll be a complete new documentation website soon. And this (and much much more) will be part of it.
You may help completing the site by simply giving us an idea of what is currently missing. Apart from those topic I'm currently writing (in my brain), there may be need for more. Or if some existing topic needs polishing, please feel free to ask for that

The big thing I'm looking for is some straight forward documentation on how to measure network traffic from a Linux box.
I assume iptables is pretty much the std option for this, and I know there are some scripts in the site but there is no step-by-step instruction on how to do this.
I would have thought this would be a common thing , i'd would be nice if these where in-built into the product but for now I'm just going thro another learning excercise for cacti.
But thanks for the help so far..

Normally, cacti (as mrtg and others) graphs SNMP data read for specfic interfaces. These will include all traffic, no matter what source/destination IP Address used. You question touches flow analysis (netflow, IPFIX, see http://www.ntop.org, ...). AFAIK, there's no SNMP support for that.
