HOW do you monitor win32 from linux? I've had no luck!

Post by johndoe123 »

What is your preferred method to monitor win32 from linux? I have had absolutely no luck with using snmp between missing data in graphs and lack of useful responses.

I am looking for a simple "it works" method for mointoring the following on all windows boxes:

Disk space usage
CPU
Network Traffic
Processor.

SNMP or WBEM-> WMI are the main options. http://www.openpegasus.org/

What windows OS are you monitoring and having problems with?
Using the microsoft snmp agent or net-snmp?
No problems with snmp on linux devices?

I haven't tested snmp to other linux devices, other than the local cacti server which uses some sort of agent setup.

I am using the built in snmp on windows 2000 and 2003 servers.

For the above, just use the default Host MIB templates and queries. If I need more than that, I use SNMP-Informant Advanced ($$) which provides WMI->SNMP mappings and opens up more details. See screenshot below.

The Host MIB stuff is bundled into Cacti, and there are a bunch of SNMP-Informant templates in the scripts and template forum.

If you are getting empty results I would say that you are having problems with SNMP on the target machines or with a firewall or something. I haven't had any problems here.

All the graphs are blank, although "turn on debug mode" shows responses.

It looks like you are targetting a Linux box, not a Windows box. ucd/net-snmp is all related to Unix not to Windows. Also the fact that the mounted partitions list is empty, that is unusual for Windows but common for ucd/net-snmp.

It's windows 2003 enterprise server w/ stock snmp. How do I change this then? I'd like to get cpu and network traffic, althoguh other information like disk space, memory, etc. would be useful.

Host template shows 2000/xp in cacti / edit server page.

In the SNMP service, make sure you enable all of the service types under the Agent tab.
