Network interfaces retrieval & rrd file generation pb

Post by markodz »

Hello everyone,

I would like to share 2 problems I face running Cacti under Windows 2000. Here are the details concerning each software release:

apache 2.0.53
php 5.0.5
MySQL 4.1.14
RRDtool 1.2.11 (downloaded on www.cacti.net/download)
Net-snmp 5.2.1
Cacti 0.8.6.g
Cactid 0.8.6.f

I already monitor around 15 cisco routers without any problem, graphing in & out traffic and cpu load as well.

First problem is that for some reason, there are hosts for which I can't retrieve interfaces listing. When I try to make a snmpwalk -v 1 -c public 10.140.6.1 .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.1, I got a timeout. No more success either if I set timeout limit to a higher number. According to nmap -sU -p U:161 10.140.6.1, UDP port 161 appears to be open on the target host. I'm not skilled enough with nmap to know if I can rely on the results gotten with this UDP scan (maybe the command just polls the target host without taking into account any potential firewall filtering rule on the way).

The other problem is that, for certain hosts, I can retrieve interfaces listing but as I validate the form with the interfaces I need checked, the corresponding graphs appear as broken images telling me in debug mode that .rrd files haven't been found. I have no idea why the corresponding .rrd files aren't generated. The best would be to run .rrd file generation script manually but I don't know exactly which are the options that Cacti uses to take to do this. What is strange for these problematic hosts is that I can graph CPU load without any problem.

In addition, another MRTG probe that we use graphs in and out traffic without complaining at all.

If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate.
Thanks in advance for the time given to my questions.

1) Is it the windows host you're polling from or against, which you're having problems ?
2) For 10.140.6.1, can you SNMP query it from any other device sucessfully? Did you properly set up the snmp community and access lists (assuming it's a cisco router) to you can poll it via SNMP ?
3) As for the few hosts which don't have graphs... likely it's because you're not getting valid data. Turn the polling level in cacti to debug (Settings | Polling level) for one cycle and paste the output of the actual log file (./cacti/log/cacti.log). If it contains WEBLOG entries, then don't bother posting since they just clutter up the log. Turn off WEBEVENTS logging and try again.
