Question: many, many hosts

Post by cactilover »

I've got cacti up & running. I have a lot of monitors that work like this:

<path_to_monitor_script> <host> <thing_to_get>

What I want to do is set up a "Data Input" for this monitor, and leave <host> as an input field. Then, I want to be able to "auto-generate" data sources based on a list of hosts--Use the Data Source as a template, basically.

How have you guys done this? I'm trying to avoid the geometric explosion of data sources that would result if each data source only works for a single host.

Ideally, I'd like to take it one step further...given the script above, auto-generate both <host> and <thing_to_get> based on two lists.

Thanks for the help!

Version .8 will be template driven, which should address your needs. Meanwhile you could create a perl/php script that would insert the necessary data into the sql database.
